“La Serenissima” (the Most Serene Republic) - that’s what Venice is known as. Not surprisingly either... Venice is indeed an oasis of peace, and one of the most interesting, beautiful, majestic cities in the world.
Of course, “oasis” may not be the right word for a city immersed in water. In fact, the city is an island, or more accurately, a constellation of more than a hundred islands connected by bridges and canals. Not surprisingly, it is one of the only cities in the world where the primary mode of transport is by water.
Peace is a word embedded into the DNA of Venice. Founded by residents of the Veneto escaping the Visigoths, the isolation of Venice proved ideal for avoiding the attacks of the barbarians. This seclusion and peace is what defines Venice.
Venice has much to offer – picturesque canals, beautiful buildings, charming signature bridges and world famous landmarks - the city is an experience unique in itself. Venice seems to exude a sense of romance, beauty and history... not to mention the aroma of delicious Italian food and famous wines such as Barolo, Valpolicella and Prosecco.
To feel the magic of Venice, there are a few things that are a must - a morning stroll along the splendid Rialto Bridge, attending the world famous Venice Carnival (February), a Gondola ride, and my favourite - eating cicchetto and ombra (snacks and wine) with the locals.
The world's only pedestrian city, Venice is small enough to walk around. You can actually walk from one end of the city to the other in just a few hours! Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes and don’t try to compete with the locals in the fashion stakes – you might look good in brogues or high heels but Venice’s hardy streets will soon find you out!
