Home Insulation - Keep Warm and Save Energy

Talking about home insulation in July sounds a little insane.  I have to apologise for that.  But, wait up!  What’s the point of looking at home insulation during the cold winter months? By then it’s too late and any work done involves awkward construction, muddy DIY and frostbitten fingers.

Put simply, it just makes sense to look at home insulation NOW, not later.

You need more internal house heat to compensate for every drop in outside temperature. However, without proper insulation, a lot of that warmth goes out through the walls of the room, windows, as well as lofts. So you must choose your home insulation strategy with care.

Here’s a rundown of the 5 top insulation methods that you can choose from for insulating your home.

    ·         Fibreglass batts

Many of you may be familiar with this one. The flexible batts are designed in a way to fit snugly between floor or wall studs and ceiling joists. They can also be cut to length easily with a knife.

    ·         Mineral wool

Also known as rock wool, it comes in DIY-friendly batts. They are more resistant to water and fire and also firmer than fiberglass. Its density makes it a good option for soundproofing between the floors or rooms in your house. A good choice if you have rowdy kids!

    ·         Polystyrene boards

These come in a wide range of colours and the R-values are generally up to 5 per inch. In order to achieve the desired R-value, you may use it in conjunction with batt insulation. Not our favourite to be honest - polystyrene can be a nasty material.

    ·         Polyurethane foam

You can directly spray polyurethane foam insulation onto the walls, the underside of roof sheathing, or even attic floors. As a result, a seamless air barrier is created. However, the downside is that it has to be installed by trained professionals only.

    ·         Loose fill

Another great option, having cellulose particles, loose fiberglass, or mineral wool ‘blown-in’ to wall cavities or attics. They all have an R-value ranging from 3 to 4 per inch.

So those are the options available to you.

Which one do you prefer? Rather than ponder the question, why not talk to the experts so you get it right first time.
