September makes for happy days - Plums, mushrooms, leeks, peas and much more

August is over, autumn is approaching, cold (well, some more because it’s not like we get much warmth in this country anyhow) – This is the September blues!

However, I for one am not particularly depressed by the fact that the fake summer has pretty much come to an end, because the colours of this month’s produce are to die for.
We have plums, blackberries, artichokes, apples, clams, leeks, courgettes, wild mushrooms, duck, sea bass, rocket, peppers, potatoes and squash among the lot and you should definitely make sure to take advantage of it all to make the blues go away.

To start your enjoyable menu sautee some wild mushrooms with olive oil, garlic and parsley and serve them hot with a sprinkle of pepper and some crusty bread to wipe up those lovely juices.
But if you don’t like mushrooms then just indulge in a cup of homemade leek and potato or pea and mint soup. You can’t go wrong with those!

As a main I would have sea bass baked in the oven with a drop of olive oil, a sprinkle of dried oregano, chopped tomatoes, a chopped potato, garlic and black olives. Healthy AND delicious!
And if I’m feeling nostalgic and missing my father’s cooking I would sautee some clams with garlic and olive oil, add a glass of white wine, let it evaporate, add chopped tomatoes, let it reduce and mix with spaghetti.

And to finish you could roast some plums with Port and serve them with biscotti and a mascarpone cream OR tuck into apple and blackberry crumble with vanilla ice cream – The ultimate comfort food.

    Buon appetito!
