New women's employment strategy launched
11/02/2010
Businesses will be encouraged to make more highly skilled, quality part-time jobs available under a new cross-government initiative.Announcing the plans, Vera Baird, solicitor general and lead minister for the equality bill, said the strategy will tackle the gender pay gap by ensuring that being a parent is not a barrier to either opportunity or success. She stated that flexible working needs to become the norm, adding that there will be more support for businesses who offer part-time and flexible employment. Commenting on the plans, Toni Eastwood, OBE, training director at everywoman, said circumstances mean many women need more flexibility in the work place. She added: "Part-time work should not mean less pay or less value - flexibility should not come at a cheaper price." Businesses could "maintain a flexible, talented and balanced work force", she said, adding that part time and flexible working enables employers to attract and retain a more talented workforce.
