Flowers delayed 'for up to a month'
17/02/2010
Recent snow and frost has caused flowers to bloom up to a month later than usual, according to the National Trust. The organisation's annual flower count found that fewer flowers bloomed in January compared to the same period last year. Gardeners can now expect a 'spectacular spring' as different species flower together. According to Mike Calnan, the organisation's head of gardens and parks, magnolias will be "fabulous", thanks to the wet summer and warm autumn. He added that the trust's flower survey will be extended to examine climate change. "By comparing the number of plants in flower across various gardens on a set day each year and tracking those changes over time, we will be able to demonstrate how our gardens respond to weather patterns and ultimately climate change," he noted. Recently, the National Trust announced that it would open the doors of a number of its properties for free on the weekend of March 20th and 21st.
