Gardeners want 'local plants'

02/03/2010

Gardeners want 'local plants'Many gardeners would choose to buy a local or British plant over a similar one which was grown abroad, new research shows.

According to the Horticultural Trade Association's (HTA) Consumer Insight report, 74 per cent of people said every effort should be made to prevent the disappearance of local and regional differences in plant varieties.

When choosing between two similar looking plants, with comparable prices, green-fingered enthusiasts are more likely to pick a locally-grown product, the research also shows.

According to the HTA, garden retailers should capitalise on the growing demand for locally-grown plants and provide more information on the flora they sell.

Andrew Maxted, HTA director of marketing, said: "There is no doubt that the power of local continues to grow and the garden industry should tell customers more about the local products that they sell."

"We would encourage growers and retailers to tell the story behind the local products – where they were grown, who grew them and badge them accordingly."

Last month, the HTA announced that it was backing the government's Be Plant Wise campaign.
