Rare snowdrop bulbs 'not such garden bargains'
23/02/2010
Some gardeners might think that snowdrops are garden bargains, but rare bulbs of the white flower are selling for over £100 each, according to one report. The Royal Horticulture Society said a single white Autumn Snow bulb, also known as G. reginae-olgae, has been sold on eBay for £162, while other rare examples are selling for over £100. Similar prices were seen at the annual Galanthus Gala, where a number of rare snowdrop bulbs were sold for more than £100. Speaking to the society's website, Joe Sharman, who organises the Galanthus Gala, said the demand for rare snowdrops has been building up over the "last five or six years". The garden expert also sells snowdrops from his specialist nursery in Cambridgeshire. "It's been getting more and more intense this year I sold out completely within four days, whereas last year it took me three weeks," he added. Earlier this month, the National Trust said snowdrops in a number of its gardens had been delayed by the recent cold spell. Make the most of your garden with our garden prize offers.
